His statement below... This is one gift horse which, contrary to traditional saying, must be inspected thoroughly in the mouth. Primary from all of us must be a plea to the MKO Abiola family not to misconstrue the protests against the naming of the University of Lagos after their heroic patriarch. Issues must be separated and understood in their appropriate contexts. The family will acknowledge that, among the loudest opposing voices to Jonathan’s gift horse, are those who have clamoured tirelessly that MKO Abiola, the Nigerian nation’s president-elect, be honoured nationally, and in a befitting manner. Next is my confession to considerable shock that President Goodluck Jonathan did not even think it fit to consult or inform the administrators of the university, including Council and Senate, of his intention to re-name their university for any reason, however laudable. This arbitrariness, this act of disrespect, was a barely tolerated aberration of military governance. It is totally deplorable in what is supposed to be a civilian order. After that comes the bad-mouthing of MKO Abiola and the Nigerian electorate by President Jonathan who referred to MKO as the “presumed winner” of a historic election. While applauding the president for finally taking the bull by the horn and rendering honour unto whom honour is due, the particularities of this gesture have made it dubious, suspect, and tainted. You do not honour someone while detracting from his or her record of achievement. MKO Abiola was not a presumed winner, but the President-elect of a nation, and thus universally acknowledged. It is sad, very sad, that after his predecessor who, for eight full years of presidency, could not even bear to utter the name of a man who made his own incumbency possible, along comes someone who takes back with the left hand what the right has offered. However, there is hope. Legalists have claimed that there is a legal flaw to the entire process. The university, solidly backed by other tertiary institutions nation-wide, should immediately proceed to the courts of law and demand a ‘stay of execution’. That should give President Jonathan time to re-consider and perhaps shift his focus to the nation’s capital for institutions begging for rituals of re-naming. After all, it is on record that the House of Assembly did once resolve that the Abuja stadium be named after the man already bestowed the unique title of “Pillar of African Sports”. He deserved that, and a lot more. What he did not deserve is to be, albeit posthumously, the centre of a fully avoidable acrimony, one that has now resulted in the shutting down one of the institutions of learning to whose cause, the cause of learning, President-elect MKO Abiola also made unparalleled private contributions. Let me end by stressing that my position remains the same as it was when the University of Ife was re-named Obafemi Awolowo University.

SNAKE APEARS IN LAGOS BUS

The discovery of a snake inside a moving commercial bus caused commotion and left commuters scampering for safety on Wednesday in Lagos, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

Eyewitnesses told NAN that the Nissan Civilian bus, with registration number AJ 802 AKD, suddenly pulled to a halt on Apapa road on the Lagos Mainland, as frightened passengers rushed out for safety.

One of the bus passengers told NAN that she raised the alarm on sighting the snake which was aboard the bus heading for Okokomaiko, a Lagos suburb.

“I was sitting in the back and noticed something moving around my feet. I checked to look at what it was and I saw it was a snake,” said the female passenger who pleaded anonymity.

NAN reports that other passengers and passersby attempted to kill the snake but only succeeded in chopping off its tail before hiding itself in a compartment inside the bus.

All efforts aimed at removing the remainder of the snake from the bus compartment continued when NAN left the scene as both the bus driver and his conductor had abandoned the vehicle.

I KILLED HIM FOR STEALING MY INDOMIE NOODLES

A-12-year old boy, Hassan Abdullahi of Badiko in Kaduna State metropolis yesterday narrated how he killed a 27 year old man, Murtala Saminu during an argument at a tea joint on Friday.

“I was at my brother’s tea shop when Murtala came to me to buy noodles. I told him I will not cook it for him because he doesn’t pay. And if my brother should ask him, he would lie that he has given me the money. When I refused, he raised me up, saying that he will put me on the roof of the tea shop. As I was struggling with him, I used the knife with me on him. It was not deliberate, I was using the knife to slice onions and tomatoes before the argument ensued. He did not die immediately, he died at the hospital,” he said.

The boy, who said he lost his mother a long time ago, faulted the report that he killed the man after smoking drugs.

“Though, I dropped out of school in primary two, I preoccupied myself in my brother’s tea shop. I’m always at the shop with my twin brother, who was also there during the fight. I did what I did in self defence and I never meant to kill him,” he said.

When contacted, the spokesperson of the Kaduna State Police Command, DSP Aminu Lawan confirmed the killing, saying his command arrested the suspect after rescuing him from the mob that almost lynched him.

SCHOOL TEACHER (NIGERIAN)FACES JAIL TIME IN UK FOR THE RAPING 14 YEARS OLDSTUDENT

47 year old Nigerian married father of three, Keith Ogunsola, (pictured above) a science teacher from Banstead in Surrey, has been told  by a court in the UK that he will go to jail for a long time for the rape of a 14 year old student in his school.

Mr Ogunsola is accused of repeatedly raping the unnamed pupil under the pretense of giving her "extra science tuition". He would book hotel rooms and lure the female victim there, where he would proceed to have sex with her. The court heard yesterday that Ogunsola started raping the girl in 2001 but she didn't tell anyone for a long time because she didn't think anyone would believe her story against a teacher.



This is the first time the paedophile teacher will be in court. In 2008, he grabbed a 14-year-old pupil and stuck his tongue in her mouth while they were in his school office. Ogunsola also asked girls in his chemistry class whether they had performed oral sex.


The court heard he had already been warned by the school's headteacher about his conduct with female students before the assaults took place. Ogunsola was cleared of two sexual assaults at that school in 2000 and another sexual assault at a different school in 2006.

Despite this, he was spared jail because of his "weak heart". But not this time. He was told in court yesterday by the presiding judge that he will be going to prison for a very long time.

KANO—Two adults believed to be in their thirties, suspected to be lovers, were found dead in a car at the premises of Malam Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano State, Monday night. The two lovers were identified by relations as Najeeb Yunusa, General Manger, Azman Filling Station, Abuja, and Nadiya Abdu of Gwamamja quarters, Kano. Nadiya’s half brother, Jamilu who was in the hospital to collect the corpse for burial told Vanguard: “Nadiya left home on Friday evening by 4.00pm on a visit to relations within the city.” Jamilu said Nadiya, mother of a seven-year-old girl was due to pay a condolence visit to her former husband who lost his father recently. He added that other younger ones, who made the visit reported that she was picked up by her acquaintance at her sister’s house. He said: “Nadiya got missing last Friday and we understood some one we knew as her acquaintance picked her up at a relation’s residence inside the city and could not make it to her former husband’s residence on a condolence visit.” Kano Police spokesman, Deputy Superintendent Tanimu Dutse, while confirming the incident, said that investigation has commenced to unravel the mystery surrounding their death. Dutse said the result of the autopsy conducted on the deceased lovers was being awaited at the time of this report, adding that the report would assist the investigative team in arriving at their conclusions. Eight years old whose dad burnt with an iron

YUSSIF ADUSEI, the eight-year-old KG2 boy at Asafo Dadiesoaba in Kumasi, whose right foot was heinously seared by his father, Yussif Wahab, for being rowdy, wants the police to take revenge on his behalf by also roasting his father with a hot iron. The boy, who could not walk properly following the severe wounds that he suffered on his foot after being burnt with a burning iron, has passionately appealed the police to come to his aid by teaching his ‘wicked’ father a bitter lesson. Young Yussif, who is still in pain, speaking on Kessben FM in Kumasi said: “I want the police to immediately arrest my father and beat him mercilessly just as he did to me.” The KG2 boy of Ahmadiyya School at Asafo in Kumasi added that “I want the police to also burn my father with a hot iron just as he did to me so that he too will feel the pain that I felt.” Yussif’s father allegedly beat him and later ordered the boy to sit on the bed whilst he pressed a burning iron on the boy’s foot. The poor boy’s right foot developed a sore, making it impossible for him to walk properly. He was spotted by two journalists of Kessben FM on Wednesday who took him to the Emergency Centre of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital where he was admitted. Yussif said his father, who stays at Afful Nkwanta in Kumasi, sent him on an errand but he decided to visit his grandmother, Hajara Fosuwaa, at Asafo Dadiesoaba, against his father’s warning. According to him, his father, after searching for him, later found him at his grandmother’s at Asafo Dadiesoaba. Yussif’s father became angry and dragged the boy to his house. Yussif said his father, upon reaching the house, subjected him to severe beatings after which he ordered him to sit on the bed where he pressed a hot iron on his foot for disobeying him. The KG2 boy said he wailed uncontrollably but his ‘wicked’ father ignored his appeal for leniency as he pressed the burning iron further on his foot, injuring him severely. Yussif, who is now being treated by medical personnel at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, insisted that “I want the police to arrest my father, beat him mercilessly and also press a hot iron against his foot just as he did to me.” DAILY GUIDE has gathered that the Department of Social Welfare has intensified investigations into the issue which has shocked the nation. BABY BORN WITH A QURAN IN LAGOS

A big controversy is raging in Lagos following the birth of a baby boy said to be clutching a miniature Holy Quran at birth. The baby was born at a white garment church in Mushin, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria.  

While some dispute the claim, others say it is possible. A large crowd gathered at 1, Sonde Street, Ijeshatedo, Lagos home of the boy’s parents yesterday, as news of the birth spread rapidly.

His mother, Mrs. Kikelomo Ilori, 32, a Cosmetologist, told P.M.NEWS that he was born on Monday after she had carried the pregnancy for about 10 months. The single mother claimed she was abandoned by her husband who denied responsibility for the pregnancy and encouraged her to abort it. The woman told P.M.NEWS yesterday: “When I refused to abort the pregnancy, he deserted me, saying ‘that is your own problem’.” Mrs. Ilori expressed surprise at the birth of the boy. She added that the nurse who delivered her of the baby was physically challenged, but went about it commendably.

“When my baby was delivered holding a Quran in his hand, the nurse said the Quran should be thrown away. But I insisted my mother must see it before any action could be taken,” Kikelomo, who is a Christian, further explained.

Corroborating the story, Senior Rev. Victoria Yetunde Dada said during the pregnancy, Kikelomo was always coming to her for prayers and counselling.

“I advised her not to abort the pregnancy because she might die in the process. Again, I told her the foetus was sent by God and will be great,” Apostle Mother Dada told our correspondent. Controversy has continued to trail the seemingly spurious claim.

Reacting, Medical Director of Bodet Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos, Dr. Bode Tawak said scientifically, it was not possible for a baby to be born holding a Quran.

“How big is the baby’s hand to hold the Quran? How big is the Quran? How did the Quran get into her mother’s womb? I don’t know how a Quran can get into a womb. But there are things you can’t explain,” Dr. Tawak responded. He said while the incident cannot be explained medically, in Nigeria many mysterious things happen. A Kaduna-based medical practitioner, Dr. Munir Yusuf said from a medical point of view, it was not possible, but added that depending on the size of the Quran, it was possible metaphysically.

He explained that if the Quran is small enough to pass through the diameter of the vagina, with the child, it is possible. In the same vein, a herbal medicine practitioner, Chief Dr. Bola Adegunloye believes nothing is impossible, but said too much importance must not be placed on the incident.

The ultimate real-life Barbies: Photographer transforms models into plastic dolls for Mattel-inspired shoot

With stiff limbs and gormless expressions they could be mistaken for Barbie dolls.

But the female and male in these pictures aren't plastic Mattel figures but real-life models.

Vancouver-based photographer Hayden Wood used some Photoshop wizardry to transform the duo into versions of Barbie and Ken.

Both Meagan Therese Squire and James Webb have had their eyes enlarged and limbs slimmed down, to give them seemingly inhuman proportions.



The 'Barbie and Ken' shoot was the brainchild of creative Ms Squire who specialises in fashion and design.

She was initially inspired by the cover art of Nicki Minaj's latest album 'Pink Friday', which features the 29-year-old singer dressed head-to-toe in candyfloss hues.

In a bid to get the desired effect she contacted Mr Wood, who is an experienced photographer and retoucher.

He told the The Huffington Post: 'Meagan contacted me to ask if I'd be interested in shooting this creative piece with her. [Her] idea was inspired by the cover art of Nicki Minaj's album 'Pink Friday.'

Before launching his own company Wood spent six years working as a creative retoucher and graphic artist for advertising company Ogilvy in New Zealand.

He says: 'I began playing with photography as a young fella after my parent gave me my first point and shoot.'

After spending two years in the New Zealand army Wood describes that he rediscovered his passion for photography and started making use of the new technology available.

‘By 2002 I was enhancing my images with Photoshop, which today still amazes me the endless creative freedom it allows the artist.’



The images follow on from the 'living-doll' trend which is swept the internet in recent months, whereby women alter their appearance to emulate plastic dolls.

And now a scrapbook the designer made as a momento of the occasion is to go under the hammer in an online auction.

A bidding frenzy is expected from those wishing to own a piece of royal history.

The scrapbook (measuring 8½” x 5¾”) is made of deckle-edged hand-made paper incorporating lace and fabrics used for Princess Diana’s wedding gown and her bridesmaids' dresses.
The front cover features a black and white print of Diana on the steps of St Paul’s Cathedral and is edged with the specially commissioned Nottingham lace used on the bodice of the princess' bridal gown.
The inside cover is autographed by Elizabeth Emanuel herself.
