KARL LAGERFELD USED TO BE FAT... "BETH DITTO"

Karl Lagerfeld is well known for his strong opinions but the eccentric designer may have met his match in punk rock chick Beth Ditto.

The beloved plus-size lead singer of Portland-based band Gossip spoke out recently in defense of fellow star Adele following Mr Lagerfeld's comment that the Grammy award-winner was 'a little too fat'.

A talented and edgy feminist, Ms Ditto has been dressed by Mr Lagerfeld and has both performed and sat front row at his shows, but while she believes his art is 'amazing', she is less impressed by his personality.

In an interview with the UK's The Evening Standard, Ditto discussed the famous quote that prompted a hasty apology from the designer and assurance of his deepest admiration for the star.

'I don't think Adele would deny that she was fat. And I bet she doesn't,' said Ms Ditto. 'Karl Lagerfeld used to be fat himself, so you gotta think about that. He's obviously not proud of that fact.'

In fact, Mr Lagerfeld confessed to his own battle with weight in his statement in Paris Metro in February when he told readers that the 'fat' comment was printed out of context.

'I lost over 30 kilos over 10 years ago and have kept it off. I know how it feels when the press is mean to you in regards to your appearance.

'Adele is a beautiful girl. She is the best. And I can’t wait for her next CD,' he gushed.

That didn't seem to deter Ms Ditto, however, who continued by opining that the designer has 'way too much power'.

About her peer, Adele, she added: 'I doubt, and I hope, and I'm pretty confident, that she does not think about Karl Lagerfeld, ever. I bet that is the last thing on her mind at night.

'She's falling asleep on her 85 Grammys and however many millions of albums she's sold and however many millions of pounds that she has, and is just probably thinking, like, "You know what - all right!"'

This is not the first time the Gossip vocalist has openly discussed her thoughts about the designer.

She told Scotland's Sunday Mail that meeting Lagerfeld for the very first time, was 'one of the most challenging things I have ever done.

'It is much more dangerous to be a feminist and stand in front of Karl Lagerfeld and look him in the eye. That felt like resistance far more than being at a punk show full of people who already know about politics and feminism.'

Though the two have worked professionally, the singer is resolute that when it comes to character, Lagerfeld and she will most likely never be close.

'What if, come tomorrow, he hates me?' She reportedly asked prior to their initial meeting. 'Well, I don't really care because he's not my friend. It's not like a break-up. He's just a person who makes dresses for me sometimes.

'I wouldn't say he's a really cool person but he's a really cool artist.'
